Donald Trump beats Hilary Clinton in race to become US President

Donald Trump will become the 45th American president after beating Hilary Clinton in what has been an incredible race.

The Republican candidate won the vote with 278 votes, beating Clinton’s 228 votes overall. Outgoing president, Barack Obama congratulated his successor via telephone soon after the result was confirmed.

Trump was also invited to the White House on Thursday to discuss transition plans. Following his win, and talking amongst a group of his applauding supporters, he said “I want to tell the world community that while we will always put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone”.

The new president-elect commented on his competitor, Hilary Clinton saying “Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country.”

He also called for all Americans to come together as “one united people” and also made a pledge to be a president for all American people.

Around the world, leaders have reacted to the news of Trump’s election, with Prime Minister Theresa May stating that the UK and America have an “enduring and special relationship” and would remain close partners.

The European Union stated that close co-operation with the US would be the only way to deal with unprecedented changes all around the world.
