Jessie talks us through her top 10 Netflix picks for December!
- The Fundamentals of Caring
Let’s start off with a Netflix Original, shall we? This is an American drama film that was released a few months back about a retired writer who takes a caregiving course after the death of his son, he then gets a job from a lady called Elsa and her son Trevor and they take an amazing road-trip. It is emotional and hilarious, and has one of my favourite actors, Paul Rudd in – alongside singer and actress Selena Gomez.
- Soft Lad
Soft Lad was an instant draw for me since, if anybody loves Eastenders, it has Paul in! It is a romantic drama about a young man who is involved in a love affair with his sisters husband, while the husband wrestles with his demons and they force him to come to terms with his sexuality. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster, but you can’t help but be drawn into it straight away!
- I Love You, Man
Ooops, it’s another Paul Rudd film. Now, this is quite an old film but I only just got around to watching it – and I was OBSESSED! It’s an American rom-com about a man without any friends, looking for a best man for his wedding. So, his wife signs him up to all these sites that seem like dating websites, but to meet friends, and guess what – he meets one! But, the friend slowly starts to drain his relationship with his wife! This is definitely a must watch!
- Would You Rather
A bit of a turn here – Would You Rather is an American psychological thriller. It is based on a party game of ‘would you rather’ but with a twist. There’s a multi-millionaire who are giving people the chance to win money through playing the game – in quite a sadistic way. For example, there’s an ex alcoholic who is dared to drink an entire decanter of Scotch for $50,000. The film is based around a girl called Iris who is trying to get the money to help out her sick brother. It’s twisted and crazy, but addictive to watch.
- Bad Education
Bad Education is a British sitcom, and if you haven’t seen it – what are you doing?! Jack Whitehall is a teacher called Alfie Wickers who is labelled as one of the worst teachers ever, and it documents his triumphs and failures as a teacher. There are 3 series and every episode is better than the next. Alfie’s class seems like a group of misfits from every type of stereotypical high schooler you’d ever see.
- Gavin and Stacey
Speaking of cult British TV shows – GAVIN AND STACEY IS ON NETFLIX! If you haven’t seen Gavin and Stacey, it’s an old British sitcom about two people, Gavin and Stacey, one from Essex and one from Billericay and they are originally in a long distance relationship. The series show the developing of their relationship and tell the story of both of their hilarious families and friends! Seriously, WATCH IT!
- Bride Wars
This is an old favourite of mine that I recently discovered again on Netflix. It’s an American rom-com that stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as two childhood best friends who have always wanted their weddings at the Plaza Hotel, and to be each others maid of honours. They schedule their wedding planners and the weddings when they both get engaged – but there’s a problem – they both get scheduled to have their weddings on the same day. Well, then what? Hell breaks loose.
- Chernobyl Diaries
This is an American disaster/horror film that is based around a group of friends who are travelling. They then decide to go on a tour of Pripyat, an abandoned town that’s on the outskirts of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. But, they decide to go into the nuclear power plant zone and they all get lost due to the van breaking down. So, a group of friends are stuck in a town full of old mutated beasts and people – what could go wrong? I found this film chilling and incredibly jump-inducing.
- The Wrestler
This is obviously a film for any wrestling fans out there, but it may still be your thing even if you aren’t a fan of the sport! This is an American sports drama film starring Mickey Rourke about a professional wrestler who is past his prime, with his life slowly falling apart. Randy (Mickey Rourke) agrees to a re-match of one of his best matches of his career, yet complications ensue, which sees his life fall apart even more. This is one of those films that you just need to watch, as I don’t wanna spoil too much for you!
- Chalet Girl
This is a British-German-Austrian rom-com and sport film. It centres around Kim Mathews who tries to get a job as a chalet girl but gets turned down by the rich clients she applied to work for, but one of their girls gets injured so they eventually take her on. She has to work along other chalet girls who aren’t really her biggest fan as she isn’t as glamorous as the other girls, and Kim falls in love with one of the other girls boyfriends. She has to live in the Alps alone while trying to learn how to snowboard. So, what does she do? She only gets encouraged to enter a snowboarding contest. Common logic – right?! All in all, it is a great feel-good movie to watch, especially around this time of year.
