Etsy Made Local is an annual community-led initiative scheme with pop up markets appearing across the country between December 1st and 3rd, where local sellers can trade unique and handmade gifts suitable for the Christmas period.

In recent years there has been an influx of ‘shopping independent’ or ‘supporting small businesses’, which is a principle that sites like Etsy and Notonthehighstreet, for example, aim to support and encourage. Items sold on these sites are often handmade, unique or can be personalised and contrast to the mass marketed produced gifts available from the usual high street retailers.

For 2017, there are over 40 locations, with approximately 2,000 sellers across the country participating – with the overarching goal of connecting Christmas shoppers with businesses in their community.

Southampton’s Etsy Made Local takes place on December 3rd between 11 pm and 5 pm and is the first of its kind in the Southampton region. The event combines local makers based in Southampton itself or the surrounding areas, from the New Forest to Winchester. The event itself supports small local businesses in its choice of venue too –  the upstairs space of the Guildhall branch of Mettricks Coffee House will be decorated with plenty of incredible glittery festive decorations, shopping stalls, and guests are encouraged to purchase festive beverages whilst there – the space also welcomes well-behaved dogs. The first 25 shoppers will receive a special custom goodie bag too, acting as an incentive to arrive early.

The Make Arcade

A number of diverse creatives have emerged and wanted to participate in the event, making the Southampton team 100 members strong and they always love to see new faces – so Etsy shop owners reading this should definitely join!) Rachel (from Onrshop) who has been selling on Etsy since 2010 is the team Captain, supported by 3 other great team leaders; Kate, Charlotte, and Helen who’ve worked incredibly hard to organise and promote the event and they’re joined by a whole host of sellers whose wares range from jewellery and illustrations to piñatas and cushions.

Additionally, to the shopping opportunities at the stalls – there will also be all day drop-in workshops, live painting sessions and a sparkly photo backdrop wall (for an exciting competition but also as a background for that perfect Instagram photo).

Further details of the event are visible on the Facebook event page or Instagram and if you’re unable to attend the event you can still purchase from local (and global) sellers via Etsy.com
